Summertime Again! As Spring turns to Summer, the air is warming and the humidity is up. Some of us have air conditioners that keep us cool, but then we close the windows and the sounds of nature are diminished once again. I value the sounds of summer immensely and try to keep the windows open as much as possible. The summer breezes are so enticing, wafting through the open windows, blowing the curtains gently, bringing movement to mind. The sounds of a Cardinal singing early in the morning are delightful to wake up to! Children playing is another wonderful sound. Their laughter and voices are reminiscent of times gone by, bringing back wonderful memories. If we didn't have our memories, what would we have? With another change of season comes growth and happiness. Growth of all the plants outdoors, beautiful flowers and vegetables alike. Personally I can't wait to taste a tomato that I have grown from my own garden. They are always so much more delicious when homegrown than store bought! So during the summer, why not take the time to get outdoors, take a walk, sit under a shady tree with a glass of iced tea or lemonade, and savor the day or night. Get together with friends and enjoy a meal outside. Maybe even take your yoga mat outdoors for a practice in Nature. It's wonderful! Take the time to breathe deeply, stretch fully and let in all the goodness that Mother Nature has to offer all of us, and to let go of what doesn't serve us anymore. Becoming aware of our surroundings, our inner body, mind, spirit. All things that yoga teaches us. Unity of ourselves with all. Taking just a few minutes each day to sit quietly, focus inwardly and listen to our "inner teacher" helps to make us aware of what is truly important in our lives. Practicing a few minutes of pranayama (breath regulation) will clear our mind, strengthen and clear our lungs, and can calm us if we are stressed or invigorate us if we are tired. A few asanas to stretch and strengthen our physical body will prepare us for meditation or to go out and face our day prepared for whatever life brings. Remembering that yoga is a practice, a journey and not a destination will keep you on track to a more healthful, calm and centered life.
One of the biggest misconceptions about Yoga is that it is a religion. On the contrary, Yoga is a philosophy that enhances all religions. Yoga means "to yoke" or "union". It teaches that we are all one and that we should work together as one to bring about peace and harmony for all beings. The Yamas and Niyamas are similar to The Ten Commandments. Yoga teaches that there is One God, and many paths ultimately leading to this One God. Yoga teaches compassion and tolerance, non-harming, truthfulness, and non-stealing to name just a few of it's teachings. Call today (998-6773) to schedule a private one-on-one session so that we can discuss when you would be able to begin. In the first session we will sort out your goals and determine how we will work together to get you on the road to better health both physically and mentally. What is Kundalini Yoga? Kundalini Yoga is often call the "yoga of awareness" because it brings together the body, mind, and spirit to become a whole, united individual. In Kundalini yoga there are specific sets or "kriyas" that are performed to bring about specific results. These can range from breaking addictions to alleviating depression, to cleansing the liver and other organs. You will become stronger both physically and mentally. Kundalini yoga is a form of Hatha Yoga, the asanas are timed, usually from 1-3 minutes in duration. They include breathwork, mantra, meditation and singing. The kriyas were brought to this country in the 1960's by Yogi Bhajan and were taught at Woodstock among other places. He saw that many people were using drugs to get high and showed them that this could be achieved without the use of drugs, instead by practicing yoga. It may seem difficult at first try, but if you stick with it, it becomes easier and the results are amazing. Give it a try, you may find that it does wonders for you!
