WHAT DO I NEED TO PRACTICE YOGA?

It isn't necessary to purchase a lot of expensive equipment or clothing to practice yoga.

One essential is a good yoga mat.  It should be "sticky" so that your hands and feet don't slip in your poses.  It doesn't need to be too thick...an 1/8"to a 1/4" thickness is sufficient.  The padded Pilates type mats will not give you sufficient traction and some are stretchy which may contribute to injury, so please don't use them.

Stretchy clothing is good so that you can move freely.

Water is good to have on hand in case you get thirsty.

An open mind is essential to the practice of yoga.

That pretty much covers what is essential to practice yoga.  The rest is helpful but not necessarily needed.

A block can be helpful to get into the poses when you may be starting out and not too flexible yet.

A strap is also helpful to get deeper in stretches or to hold arms or legs in alignment in poses.

A wall can be helpful in balancing poses or some relaxation poses.

A chair for those practicing senior or pre-natal yoga.

A small firm pillow, blankets.
